Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2012. Brooklyn, New York City
I attended the 30th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade yesterday. I was so excited about the set that I edited them already. How’s that for efficient? This year’s King Neptune was Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling and the Queen Mermaid was Annabella Sciorra and there were plenty of pirates, mermaids, mermen, jellyfish, and sea monsters parading around in their best parade attire as well as vintage cars.
I wrote all about the parade’s history a few days ago when I posted a set from 2011’s Mermaid Parade. The parade was a bit slow this year in that it didn’t seem to move as effortlessly as it usually does but other than that it delivered in terms of awesomeness and costumes.
I ended up standing on the sidelines (which I prefer over roaming around in the parade itself) with an absolutely awesome group of people who all knew each other from CouchSurfing, a website that connects travelers with local communities. I couldn’t have asked for better companions to stand with! One of the women had a sign promising “free hugs” and I think 80% of the parade ending up gravitating towards us for some hugs. I haven’t smiled so much in ages.
You can view the full set (with over 50 photos!) here in my Flickr set:
